Carroll Dunham (born 1949) is one of the most widely respected painters working in the United States today. His style remains indefinable, and his work since the 1980s, when he rose to prominence within the New York art scene, is consistently exploratory in both form and technique. Dunham combines a dual interest in both abstraction and figuration with a focus on materiality; wood, for example, plays a large part in his compositions which take their eclectic inspiration from the grains themselves. Dunham lives and works between Connecticut and Brooklyn, New York.
