Mark Bradford (born 1961, Los Angeles, CA) continues to live in LA where the social and physical geography of the city influence both the subject and form of his practice. He is best known for his large scale, Modernist Abstraction paintings that merge high art with imagery from popular culture. Elephant hide like to the touch, Bradford's collages are constituted of many layers of paper, paint, rope and thick glue, akin to the fly posted advertisements pasted around urban streets.

Bradford's practice further extends through public sculpture, installation and video works. He is also a founder of Art + Practice, a foundation established to encourage education and culture by providing support services to young foster youth predominantly living in South Los Angeles.

Bradford is a recipient of the Whitney Museum's Bucksbaum Award and was a 2009 MacArthur Fellow.
